  • Day 6

    Murmansk

Begin the day with breakfast at the hotel, followed by a meeting in the hotel hall. Embark on a bus trip to Teriberka, a rural locality in the Kolsky District of Murmansk Oblast, Russia, situated on the coast of the Barents Sea at the mouth of the Teriberka River. Explore Teriberka, a settlement with historical mentions dating back to circa 1523.

Teriberka, nestled in the Kola District, stands as one of the region's most renowned settlements. In 2016, it gained global recognition, listed among the 20 most popular tourist destinations by National Geographic Traveler magazine. This ancient fishing village, perched on the Barents Sea coast, offers the closest access to the Arctic Ocean in Russia, reachable by car. Notably, the acclaimed film "Leviathan" was shot here.

The journey from Murmansk to Teriberka spans a mere 120 km, yet the route itself offers breathtaking vistas of endless tundra, imposing hills, and rugged cliffs. Teriberka comprises two parts: Staraya Teriberka and Lodeynoye. Staraya Teriberka reflects the traditional charm of coastal fishing villages with its wooden houses, boats, and boat garages. Along the Teriberskaya Bay, lies the haunting "cemetery of abandoned ships," remnants of trawlers from the 1930s-1950s.

Lodeynoye, the newer part, showcases Soviet-era buildings weathered by sea winds. It serves as the starting point for the final leg of the journey towards the "edge of the earth." A short walk or ATV ride leads to the Arctic Ocean coast, where crashing waves, round boulders, and stark rocks evoke a sense of awe at the Earth's extremity. Brave souls may opt for a dip in the frigid Arctic waters, while others can partake in the ritual of drinking warming beverages and collecting ocean water as a memento.

Teribersky Waterfalls, a stunning attraction, cascades from a lake to the sea. Nearby, Coastal Defense Battery No. 199 stands as a testament to the region's wartime history, defending the Kola Peninsula's coast during World War II.

The Teriberka Natural Park covers 2,418.5 hectares, offering recreational and nature protection zones. While a permit is required to visit the park, Teriberka village itself falls outside its boundaries, welcoming visitors without permits.
